A Short Account of My Visit to Valiazheekal Beach, Kayamkulam

Following a journey of about 4 km through a narrow road fenced on one side by coconut trees and huge boulders, invaded by tiny thickets of moss like grass, and on the other by the dark green Kollam-Kottapuram waterway, you reach the magnificient spot where shining black soil and blue green waters meet you, the Valiazheekal beach. I and my comrade took an early ride to this beach, sometime around 8 am. Tagging along the more familiar narrow road sandwiched on both sides by a monotonous row of houses, we reached the Perumpally bridge, the point from which excitement started to soar high. It was a rather windy day and the air around was brimming with hopes of a thin drizzle. The clouds, fluffy and heavy, hung low upon the greenery that housed the Kayamkulam Kayal at its heart. What can be more beautiful than this sight while crossing a bridge? Down the bridge, we were rushed into a pathway walled on one side by boulders, beyond which the blue seas were visible; and the soil was dressed in a moss carpet, tiny purple flowers scattered upon it, sheltered by a gang of tall coconut trees. We rode through this path for about 10 minutes before we reached the beach shore. The beach was quite isolated, probably because it was morning, except for a coloured canoe visible at a distance above the blue-green waters carrying four to five fishermen. From an angle, the Valiazheekal beach had a look similar to that of the Kovalam beach, perhaps because of the bunch of coconut trees that stood tall and towering at the distance. Moreover, the Valiazheekal beach, like the Fortkochi beach, has a triangular portion of rocks jutting towards the waters, standing upon which one can see the shores of the Azheekal beach, Alappuzha, on the opposite side. We spent about an hour at the beach feeling the shallow waves at our feet, admiring the glitter of the beach sand in the sun and oogling at the tiny birds that gathered as a bunch around some dreamy white crane perched upon one leg. And wished we could stay longer, perhaps until the coloured canoe moved farther away from the shores, making itself visible to our naked eye only as a tiny moving speck of colours upon the vast ocean. Or perhaps until the sun set for the day splattering a plethora of colours upon the sky.
